ESALA PERAHERA : A MAJESTIC CULTURAL PROCESSION IN SRI LANKA 


INTRODUCTION

The Esala Perahera, also known as the Nuwara Dalada Perahera.  Esala Peraheraof the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, is one of Sri Lanka’s grandest and most sacred cultural festivals. Held annually in the city of Kandy (often referred to as “Nuwara” in Sinhala, meaning “city”), this spectacular event honors the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, housed at the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic).

The Perahera combines religious devotion, history, and artistic expression. It dates back to the 3rd century CE and has evolved into a major festival that attracts thousands of locals and tourists. THE PROCESSION

The Nuwara Dalada Perahera takes place over several nights during the month of Esala (July–August). Each evening, the procession grows larger and more elaborate. The parade features:

  • Magnificent elephants adorned in dazzling garments and lights, including the main tusker carrying the Sacred Relic casket.

  • Traditional dancers, drummers, whip crackers, and flag bearers showcasing Sri Lanka’s vibrant cultural arts.

  • Kandyan drummers and fire dancers creating rhythmic, mesmerizing performances.

The Perahera is divided into multiple processions, each representing a different temple or devale (shrine) such as Natha, Vishnu, Kataragama, and Pattini.

SPIRITUAL AND CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE 

The Nuwara Dalada Perahera is not just a spectacle — it is a deeply spiritual event. It seeks blessings from the deities for rainfall, fertile harvests, and the protection of the country. The ritual also symbolizes the continuity of Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage, which has been preserved for centuries.
